Mud mayhem to Lawn heaven!

Lawn problems? Are your lawns getting ‘boggy’ or way to ‘muddy’ but don’t want artificial grass? If so then these porous plastic pavers could be the perfect solution for you.

Shaldon Regatta were suffering with this problem, they have a very steep grass drive leading to a shed which was getting ripped up and turning into a bog every time it was driven on. Unfortunately the weather is not our friend so it was always causing a problem.

When we discussed using resin bound or tarmac to make the surface much more durable the Regatta were not keen, they really wanted to keep it ‘green’ and ‘real’

Surface it Solutions suggested porous pavers. They seemed like a brilliant alternative as the ground would be grass but the pavers stop the ground being ripped up when driven on in wet conditions-and lets face it thats what we have to deal with a lot!!

Below is some information about the plastic pavers:

Porous plastic pavers provide ground stabilisation and can be filled with either gravel or grass to provide a free draining permeable pavement surface that is SuDs source control compliant (Sustainable Urban Drainage System). The black porous paving grid system provides over 150 tonnes of support per m². The plastic pavers open cell structure is ideal for allowing grass roots to spread from cell to cell, allowing vertical and horizontal passage of water / drainage and the flow of nutrients. These benefits provide a great growing environment for grass with the ground stabilisation that the plastic porous paver gives to the grasses structure. The pavers open cell structure is ideal for ensuring that angular gravel is interlocked firmly, this ensures that the gravel is retained and not loose to be spilled all over the place as a car wheel drives over. The porous pavers provides the grass with the structural integrity that is required to cope with stabilising the ground for pedestrians, cars, vans, trucks, lorries, coaches and buses.

We carried out some groundworks to get the sight ready and dug out a trench so we could run a drain down the side of the pavers.

The pavers have a 2″ spike on them to keep them in place.
Once pavers were laid we toped it with a top soil/sand mixture and grass seed.
The first part of the drive we decided to tarmac so we carried out ground works, laid a hardcore and topped with tar macadam.
This photo was taken in February and as you can see the grass is growing nicely. This type of lawn is perfect for a well used area that is prone to getting ‘muddy.’ Please get in contact with Surface to Solutions to discuss any lawn / garden requirements.
